Planetary gears

The heart of my time-telling art is the planetary gear set used to move the minute and hour hands at the correct speed relative to the second hand. In most clocks the gears are hidden away in a small black box at the back of the clock. In my work the dynamic and intriguing gear wheels all move in front of the viewer's eyes. True art in motion.

Sun and planet gears are very rarely used in traditional clockmaking but they have a unique rotational symmetry that I love. To my knowledge they have never been made this big!

Technology

Advanced 2D and 3D computer aided design and simulation technologies are used in the design process. Manufacturing takes place using state-of-the-art laser cutters and 3D printers. Quartz chronometry and precision stepper motors are combined with programmable micro-computers to ensure accurate timekeeping.

Craftsmanship

All my work is cut by laser to the high precision required for accurate time-telling. New technology is combined with traditional craftsmanship and artistry to design, craft, paint and assemble each piece to create a work of perpetually moving art.
